The Tumblers!

Tumblr people of all the world, unite!

I was thinking, perhaps we can write down, each one of us, what we don't like of T3 and why. Let's try to make an open letter for Davidville! :)

Ps. keep it sane!

For me: the colour palette in the theme editor is too small, and so too hard to choose the right color

Here are my gripes with v3...

1. While I like the idea behind the new look of the theme editor, the edit boxes and color palette are way, way too small.
2. Why am I not allowed to hide/unhide my friend's posts anymore? I honestly believe that v2's dashboard was much more user-friendly.
3. Tumblr radar was pretty cool to browse through. Why take it away?

It may be that I'm the only one experiencing this but the page load times to and from the dashboard or when using the bookmarklet seem to be much longer than before the upgrade. I've been getting a ton of "time out" errors today as well.

My dislikes/concerns:

* lack of ability to hide friends on the dashboard view. (I would suggest the addition of two views into the dashboard: a myposts view, and a myfriendsposts view, plus the addition of the ability to turn individuals off, as well as the group)

* editboxes and colour palattes are too small.

* truncation of imported posts from my own journal/etc.

* text and list bullets in imported posts are coloured the same as the links. It should be different.

* the archive is hideous and unwieldly.

* the preview panel in the theme editor seems to fail frequenly, and show just the
plaintext of my code, rather than implementing it.

* imported posts no longer marked with the service they were imported from.

* misalignment of some imported text; lines split in the middle where they should not be.

* lack of a how-to on exactly how one is to make use of the new javascript inclusion code and how/where one is to style the output.

* too much space wasted on alternate themes in the theme editor side panel; there are better ways to display such info, that would then allow more room for editboxes. (in a side-scrolling iframe, for example)

* lack of any kind of listing, or any other way to find other tumblr accounts.

It makes me sad to say this, but, a lot of these new tweaks are taking the appealing charm away from this service that made me love it to begin with.

I think I'd like to see some relatively minor stuff.

1. Make a way to hide individual friend's posts. Some of my friends post a whole lot more frequently than others so I tend to like to just see their page as is, rather than in my Dashboard. With their many posts, it bumps others down my dashboard...kinda annoying, but it would be nice to see the change.

2. Login from a custom URL. I have my tumlbr at http://tumblr.fronkis.com...if I'm not already logged in, I don't see the dashboard and then have to go to the regular tumblr site.

3. Make a way to save different versions of your custom theme. I like to tweak and experiment with my custom theme from time to time and instead of copying and pasting to a text file and saving it when it's in a sold state, I'd like to just save a backup in my Tumblr account...that'd be nice.

4. A way to search descriptions of other tumblrs so you can stumbl some tumbl :)

I think they're more "general" requests than gripes with V3...

Another dislike:

* I realise we've been given the option of using plaintext or richtext in our settings panel. However, it does not appear that choosing plaintext actually means that's what you'll get when you go to edit an old post. I tried to edit something just now, and it offered up a richtext editor to me. (as an aside: I hate richtext editors passionately.)

yes lonita
I can edit old posts (previous V.3) or post imported (via RSS) using the plaintext editor.
I have broken a text-post that had 2 youtube videos editing with the wonderful richtex editor. Agggg! ! !

It appears to be fixed
Today (5th of November), I was able to fix my broken post.

You guys pretty much summed up all my dislikes so far lol. Has anyone else had an issue with blockquotes when using markdown?

Reply to This

Yeah, I just tried the > style blockquote for markdown and it didn't work.

Most of my gripes are covered above.
Also:

1. The share bookmark should include the tagging features (once tagging is functional)

2. The *bold* button in the rich editor inserts 'b'. It used to insert 'strong' and probably still should.

3. Include url field for audio already uploaded.

4. It would be great if you could customize the permalink template too. At least throw a unique id on the body tag so the page could be uniquely styled.

I suppose that you can't say <body {block:permalink}class="perm"{/block:permalink}> ??

Well I wish I had thought of that. Thanks for the tip, that works perfectly.

Cool!
....whoa. Wait. I gave a web coding tip to the guy with the coolest Tumblr layout ever? I guess that's my obscure geeky moment in the sun for this year...
